Gone Girl

With its foul language and a scene of horrific sexual violence, the movie Gone Girl cannot be recommended viewing. Nevertheless, it invites some comment for its popularity and its potential influence on attitudes towards marriage (which are already becoming increasingly cynical).
A man (Ben Affleck) comes home to find his wife (Rosamund Pike) missing, and the house showing signs of a violent struggle. He comes under suspicion for her murder. The truth is, that she has framed him, having discovered that he has been having an affair.
The message of the film is that marriage is a battle – between the man, who desires self-gratification, and the woman, who desires control. The moral? – only fools would enlist in such a battle, because you can never trust one another.
The film is, of course, a deeply pernicious attack on traditional marriage. Nevertheless, it does illustrate the truth of the present verse of Scripture:-
Genesis 3:16 To the woman [God] said, “…Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
What it lacks, sadly, is any sense of God’s redeeming grace.
