Top Ten Puritan Classics
I’d like to present a list of recommended Puritan works (well, perhaps a couple of them are best considered honorary Puritans). They’re all available online. In no particular order of merit:-
- A Body of Divinity, by Thomas Watson – Watson teaches Christian doctrine with winsomeness and insight.
- The Christian in Complete Armour, by William Gurnall – a surpassingly wonderful exposition of part of Ephesians 6.
- The Pilgrim’s Progress, by John Bunyan – a timeless classic
- The Fountain of Life, by John Flavel – presenting Christ in his essential and mediatorial glory
- The Bruised Reed, by Richard Sibbes – comfort for the afflicted
- The Reformed Pastor, by Richard Baxter – towards a truly godly Christian ministry
- Exposition of the Old and New Testaments, by Matthew Henry. This commentary will never go out of date.
- Letters, by Samuel Rutherford – wise pastoral counsel
- Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God, by Jonathan Edwards – reflections on revival
- The Art of Prophesying, by William Perkins – on preaching
