The Angel Gabriel
Mitch Chase notes that Gabriel is mentioned in just two books of the Bible: Daniel 8:16; 9:21 and Luke 1:19,26.
In the Daniel passages, Gabriel makes known events that were to occur in the distant future.
In the Luke passages, Gabriel makes known near-future events. A son is to be born to Zechariah and also to Mary.
There are a number of points of comparison. Looking first at Daniel and Zechariah:
- The Jerusalem temple. In Dan 8:11-14, Daniel learned that something would happen to the temple. In Lk 1:8f, Zechariah’s encounter took place in the temple.
- Both Daniel and Zechariah were fearful when they saw Gabriel, Dan 8:17; Lk 1:12.
- Daniel learns about a future figure who will bring trouble to many, Dan 8:24f. Zechariah learns about a figure who will bring joy to many, Lk 1:14ff.
- Both Daniel and Zechariah experienced bodily effects. Daniel was overcome and was sick for some days, Dan 8:27. Zechariah could not speak, Lk 1:22.
Turning now to Daniel and Mary.
- Gabriel speaks of the Lord’s regard for Daniel (Dan 9:23) and for Mary (Lk 1:28,30).
- Gabriel speaks to both Daniel (Dan 9:25f) and Mary (Lk 1:32f) about a future King.
Conclusion
In Daniel, Gabriel prophesied the Messiah; in Luke he announced the fulfilment of the prophecy and announced the Messiah’s name as ‘Jesus’.
