Atonement: unlimited AND definite

In theology, we should be as logically consistent as Scripture, but no more so.

Sometimes, we have to accept that a pair of revealed truths are both true precisely because they have both been revealed, not because we can fully reconcile them in our own minds.

Such pairs of truths would include:-

Trinity – God is three and God is one
Incarnation – Jesus is both human and divine
Sovereignty – God is sovereign, and humans are responsible

I have a hunch that something similar has to be said about the extent of the atonement:-

Not only: God in Christ has made provision for the salvation of everyone; but also: God in Christ elects a certain number to eternal life

Robert Lightner puts it like this:-

‘It is no more inconsistent to believe in sovereign election and unlimited atonement than it is to believe in sovereign election and human responsibility—two parallel and complementary truths.’

I find myself drawn, a little reluctantly, to consider the disputed issue of the extent of the atonement.  I say ‘a little reluctantly’, because while, on the one hand, I agree that thinking Christians should pursue truth as far as Scripture leads, on the other hand I am not persuaded that the question can be fully resolved in this life, and I fear lest we seek to be wise beyond what is written.

The issue, for me, does not involve Arminian or Hyper-Calvinistic tenets (both of which are, to my mind, clearly lopsided). …

Extent of the atonement – a head count

To be sure, we do not establish the truth or falsity of a doctrine by the number or names of those who support it.  Nevertheless, David L. Allen’s outline of ‘notable representatives’ of the four main views provides a helpful map.

I refrain from defining these four positions here, because to do so would require more space, nuancing, and qualification than is possible at this time.

My own tentative additions to Allen’s list are marked with an *asterix.…

Matthew 8:5/Luke 7:3 – Who asked Jesus to help?

Matthew (Mt 8:5-12) and Luke (Lk 7:1-10) both have an account of a Roman centurion whose servant Jesus healed.

Matthew 8:5 When he entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him asking for help.

Luke 7:3 ‘When the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave.’

So, did the centurion personally ask Jesus for help, or did he send others to do this on his behalf?…

In the course of a helpful summary and discussion of John Owen’s treatise on The Death of Death in the Death of Christ (a celebrated work defending the doctrine of particular atonement), Andrew David Naselli offers, in tabular form, a reminder of the tensions that surround several significant doctrines:-

“All authority”

The Lord Jesus declared: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18).  John Piper outlines ten ‘sightings’ of that authority.  We see it:-

  1. In his act as the creator of all things, Jn 1:3.
  2. In his sustaining the world, Heb 1:3; Col 1:17.
  3. In his governing of all nature, Mt 10:29; Lk 8:25.
  4. In his sovereignty over Satan and all his demons, Mk 1:27; 1 Jn 5:18.
  5. In his oversight and governance of all the affairs of history, Rev 17:14.

The purpose of miracles

Why did Jesus perform miracles?  A number of reasons may be suggested:-

  1. To authenticate the message of the gospel. This was acknowledged by Nicodemus (Jn 3:2) and affirmed in Heb 2:4.  Miracles ‘give evidence that God is truly at work and so serve to advance the gospel’.  This was true not only in Jesus’ ministry, but also applied in the early church (Acts 8:6–8; 9:35, 42).
  2. To bear witness to the fact that God’s kingdom has come (Mt 10:7f; 12:28; Lk 4:18; 9:1f).

What Evangelical Religion is not

Having set out what he regards as the five leading features of ‘evangelical religion’ (i.e. evangelical faith), J.C. Ryle then goes on to write about what it is not:-

1.  It does not despise learning, although it steadily refuses to place any uninspired writings on a level with revelation.

2.  It does not undervalue the Church, although it refuses to exalt the Church above Christ, or teach people that membership of the Church is identical with membership of Christ.…

Evangelical Religion

JC. Ryle (1817-1900) was a doughty supporter and proponent of ‘evangelical religion’ (i.e. evangelical faith).

In his celebrated work, Knots Untied, Ryle set out what he regarded as the leading features of such faith:-

“These I consider to be five in number.

a) The first leading feature of Evangelical Religion is the absolute supremacy it assigns to Holy Scripture, as the only rule of faith and practice … Show us anything plainly written in that Book, and, however trying to flesh and blood, we will receive it, believe it, and submit to it.…
