As the pages of the New Testament testify, the ministry of the Word encampasses a wide range activities.  Over thirty verbs are employed.  According to Peter Adam, these may be categorised as follows:

Words of Information: teach, instruct, make known, remind.

Words of Declaration: preach, proclaim, cry out, testify, bear witness, declare, write, read, pass on, set forth.

Words of Exhortation: call, denounce, warn, rebuke, command, give judgment, encourage, appeal, urge, ask.

Words of Persuasion: explain, make clear, prove, guard, debate, contend, refute, reason, persuade, convince, insist, defend, confirm.…

Why expository preaching?

‘Expository Preaching,’ writes Peter Adam, ‘is the preaching of the message of a book of the Bible, usually verse by verse, paragraph by paragraph, chapter by chapter, by explanation and application of it to the congregation.’

Here are fifteen argument in favour of expository preaching:-

  1. It explains and applies the Bible as it was actually written – not as a collection of quotations, useful texts, inspiring ideas or isolated stories, but as a sequence of sentences, paragraphs, and book.

Expository, yet merely moralistic?

Peter Adam points out that it is quite possible for a preacher to use the expository method and yet still remain stubbornly moralistic.

Thus (and I’m slightly paraphrasing here):-

  • Genesis 1 – the importance of creativity
  • Genesis 2 – caring for the environment
  • Genesis 3 – none of us is perfect
  • Genesis 4 – we must learn how to forgive

We need, says Adam, a Biblical theology as well as an expository method if we are to free our preaching from the dangers of mere moralism.…

Gospel spirituality

What does gospel (that is to say, evangelical and reformed) spirituality look like?  Peter Adam writes:-

1. Mediator

Christ is the mediator of the revelation of God, so this spirituality is Christ-centred, responding with faith in Jesus Christ, and especially to his saving death and resurrection.

2. Revealer

Christ has revealed the Father, so this spirituality is that of trust in God our Father, his love and kindness in Christ, and his sovereign and providential rule over everything.…

Moses the preacher

Moses was the first great preacher of the word of God of whom we have any detailed knowledge.

Moses speaks the words of God

Moses’ call is recorded in Ex 4:10-16.  When Moses protests his inability to speak for God, the reply he receives is that God will teach what to say and how to say it.  He is to be God’s mouthpiece.  He is to act as intermediary between God and the people.  He spoke on God’s behalf to the people, and the people accepted his words as the Lord’s, Ex 24:3. …
