Acts 1:1-11 – This mission cannot fail – sermon notes
Lots of people are ‘on a mission’. So are God’s people – all the time.
Success seems a remote hope, considering the state of the church then and now.
But “I have no other plan.” We know that it cannot fail, because of:-
1. The Father’s rule
Kingdom of God central in Jesus’ teaching, v3. Inclusio with 28:31.
A good question, v6. ‘Are we nearly there yet?’
But Jesus corrects them with respect to (a) timescale, v7; (b) extent, v8 (‘table of contents’). (Deut 29:29)
2. The Son’s authority
Acts – what Jesus continued to do and teach, v1
His resurrection – ‘Many convincing proofs’, v3 – apologetics link with Lk 1:1-4. The promised new creation has already begun.
His ascension – Phil 2:6-11; Eph 3:7ff. He is Lord of all.
Witnesses to him, v7. Cf. Mt 28:18f – “All authority…therefore go”
3. The Spirit’s empowerment
Essential – “Wait for the gift”, v4
Baptised, v5 – immersed, drenched
Esp. boldness of speech, 2:22; 4:8, 29. The Holy Spirit empowers the witnessess to be clear and convincing, and the hearers to be open and receptive.
Conclusion
Not just the apostles – see 8:1.
Acts open-ended; the story continues
No room for complacency. We too must ‘be his witnesses’ and stressing both word and Spirit; fact (‘many convincing proofs’) and experience (‘you will receive power’).
