Seven things the Holy Spirit does for our salvation

Summarising this article by Kevin DeYoung.
1. The Holy Spirit convicts
He exposes the world’s wickedness, convicts people of sin, and calls them to repentance. Jn 3:20.
2. The Holy Spirit converts
We must be born of the Spirit, Jn 3:5. Conversion is described as ‘the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit’, Tit 3:5. He gives spiritual discernment, 1 Cor 2:12-14. He grants repetance that leads to life, Acts 11:18. He gives assurance, Rom 5:5; He enables us to believe God’s promises, Jn 1:12f; 3:36; 6:63-65.
3. The Holy Spirit applies
He unites us to Christ and applies the Saviour’s benefits to us, Rom 8:9-11. When we have Christ, we have the Spirit.
4. The Holy Spirit glorifies
He points to Christ, and glorifies him, Jn 16:14. He speaks only what he hears, Jn 16:13. All three persons of the Trinity are fully divine, but the Son makes known the Father and the Spirit glorifies the Son.
5. The Holy Spirit sanctifies
The Spirit confers on the believer a new position in Christ and a new power in Christ, Eph 3:16. He works in us ‘for obedience to Jesus Christ, 1 Pet 1:2. He enables us to share in the character of God himself, 2 Pet 1:4.
6. The Holy Spirit equips
The Spirit confers gifts that a intended to build up the church, 1 Cor 12:; 14:12,26.
7. The Holy Spirit promises
We ‘were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it’, Eph 1:13f. The seal of the Spirit ‘authenticates us as true believers, secures our eternal safety, and marks us out as belonging to God…The Spirit is our guarantee (2 Cor. 5:5), like an engagement ring prior to the wedding, or like a down payment on a house before the final move-in date (Eph. 4:30).’
