Bruce Milne (Bible Speaks Today commentary on John) identifies the following features of Jesus evangelistic method:-

1.  His relevance. The whole conversation is couched in terms which the woman could understand. Even when Jesus attempts to take her beyond present experience by talking about eternal life, his teaching is shaped by her experience (so, living water), and she is given handles from her experience to help her grasp it.

1. He turned an everyday situation to good effect, v7. Jesus might have let this opportunity slip, for he was tired, it was midday, she was a Samaritan, a woman, and sinful.

2. He established a point of contact, v7. Jesus was thirsty, and made a natural request. Friendship is two-way: we need to learn to take as well as to give.

3. He aroused her interest. Attention is aroused at the beginning (because of the unusualness of the situation) and throughout.…

So often, we cry out, ‘Why?’ in the face of suffering.

John Piper writes:

‘We seldom know the micro reasons for our sufferings, but the Bible does give us faith-sustaining macro reasons.’

These include:

1. Repentance: Suffering is a call for us to turn from earthly attractions to heavenly treasures:

Luke 13:3–4 — “No, I tell you! But unless you repent, you will all perish as well! Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower in Siloam fell on them, do you think they were worse offenders than all the others who live in Jerusalem?”

The first recorded words of Jesus, as he began his public ministry, were:

Mark 1:15 — “The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the gospel!”

But what does the word ‘repentance’ mean?

Jerome, in the Vulgate, translated μετανοεῖτε as poenitentiam agite (‘do acts of penance’).  As Ian Paul notes, this does several things to Jesus’ command:

it shifts it from being focused on attitude and outlook to being concerned with ritual acts;

it moves it from being a response to God to being set in the context of the institution of the Church (whose priests alone could dispense forgiveness through the rite of penance and confession);

and it became a habitual ritual rather than an urgent response to the ‘end times’ coming of God.
