Communion with God – Scriptural basis
Stephen L. Porter writes:
‘While Jesus, Paul, and the other New Testament writers did not utilize language of contemplation (theōria), they did make use of nearby concepts, such as “having the eyes of your heart enlightened” (Eph 1:18), “to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge” (Eph 3:19), “Seek the things that are above, where Christ is” (Col 3:1), “though you have not seen [Christ], you love him” (1 Pet 1:8), and so on. They also certainly thought of the presence of the Lord as an experiential reality. Paul lifts the lid on his own experience at one point, telling Timothy, “At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. . . . But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me” (2 Tim 4:16-17). It appears Paul had a keen awareness of the experiential and transformational reality of the risen
and present Jesus.’ (In Embracing Contemplation)
Casting the net more widely, here are some of the biblical passages that speak of the possibility and reality of communion with God in Christ:
Psa 16:11 You lead me in the path of life;
I experience absolute joy in your presence;
you always give me sheer delight.
Psa 27:4 I have asked the LORD for one thing—
this is what I desire!
I want to live in the LORD’s house all the days of my life,
so I can gaze at the splendor of the LORD
and contemplate in his temple.
Psa 42:1 As a deer longs for streams of water,
so I long for you, O God!
42:2 I thirst for God,
for the living God.
I say, “When will I be able to go and appear in God’s presence?”
Psa 63:1 O God, you are my God! I long for you!
My soul thirsts for you,
my flesh yearns for you,
in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
63:2 Yes, in the sanctuary I have seen you,
and witnessed your power and splendor.
63:3 Because experiencing your loyal love is better than life itself,
my lips will praise you.
63:4 For this reason I will praise you while I live;
in your name I will lift up my hands.
63:5 As if with choice meat you satisfy my soul.
My mouth joyfully praises you,
Psa 73:25 Whom do I have in heaven but you?
I desire no one but you on earth.
Lk 10:39, 42 …Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he said…”one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the best part; it will not be taken away from her.”
Jn 14:15 “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. 14:16 Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever—14:17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he resides with you and will be in you.
14:18 “I will not abandon you as orphans, I will come to you. 14:19 In a little while the world will not see me any longer, but you will see me; because I live, you will live too. 14:20 You will know at that time that I am in my Father and you are in me and I am in you. 14:21 The person who has my commandments and obeys them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and will reveal myself to him.”
14:22 “Lord,” Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “what has happened that you are going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world?” 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and take up residence with him.”
Jn 15:4-11 “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you unless you remain in me.
15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me—and I in him—bears much fruit, because apart from me you can accomplish nothing. 15:6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown out like a branch, and dries up; and such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and are burned up. 15:7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you want, and it will be done for you. 15:8 My Father is honored by this, that you bear much fruit and show that you are my disciples.
15:9 “Just as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you; remain in my love. 15:10 If you obey my commandments, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. 15:11 I have told you these things so that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be complete.”
Jn 16:12 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. For he will not speak on his own authority, but will speak whatever he hears, and will tell you what is to come. 16:14 He will glorify me, because he will receive from me what is mine and will tell it to you. 16:15 Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what is mine and will tell it to you.”
Acts 7:55-56 Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently toward heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 7:56 “Look!” he said. “I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
Rom 8:15f You received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba, Father.” 8:16 The Spirit himself bears witness to our spirit that we are God’s children.
2 Cor 3:18 We all, with unveiled faces reflecting the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, which is from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
2 Cor 12:2 I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago (whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows) was caught up to the third heaven. 12:3 And I know that this man (whether in the body or apart from the body I do not know, God knows) 12:4 was caught up into paradise and heard things too sacred to be put into words, things that a person is not permitted to speak.
Gal 4:6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, who calls “Abba! Father!”
Eph 3:14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 3:15 from whom every family in heaven and on the earth is named. 3:16 I pray that according to the wealth of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner person, 3:17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, so that, because you have been rooted and grounded in love, 3:18 you may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 3:19 and thus to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God.
3:20 Now to him who by the power that is working within us is able to do far beyond all that we ask or think, 3:21 to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Col 3:1 Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 3:2 Keep thinking about things above, not things on the earth, 3:3 for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
1 Pet 1:8 You have not seen [Christ], but you love him. You do not see him now but you believe in him, and so you rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, 1:9 because you are attaining the goal of your faith—the salvation of your souls.
