‘The Bible got it right: immutable physical laws’
Hugh Ross, a Christian apologist trained in astrophysics, has long claimed that established scientific facts are supported by specific texts of the Bible.
In this post, he surveys various kinds of evidence that indicate that physical laws have reamined unchanging since the earliest moments of the universe.
Ross concludes his article by stating that:
‘Astronomers and physicists have affirmed the clear and repeated biblical claim that throughout the whole history of the universe and Earth, the laws of physics have remained fixed, that is, unchanged. Countless experiments and observations provide consistent affirmations of the Bible’s unique predictive power, a potent testimony to its divine inspiration and inerrancy.’
The following biblical texts are invoked:
Jer 33:25 – ‘I, the LORD, make the following promise: I have made a covenant governing the coming of day and night. I have established the fixed laws governing heaven and earth.’
This implies, according to Ross,that:
‘Just as the laws of physics, from thermodynamics to gravity to electromagnetism and more can be counted on to remain unchanging, so, too, can God’s promises be counted on.’
Ross then turns to:
Rom 8:20 – ‘For the creation was subjected to futility—not willingly but because of God who subjected it—in hope 8:21 that the creation itself will also be set free from the bondage of decay into the glorious freedom of God’s children. 8:22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers together until now. 8:23 Not only this, but we ourselves also, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we eagerly await our adoption, the redemption of our bodies.’
Ross asks:
‘What clearer depiction could be offered for the second law of thermodynamics?’
Furthermore:
‘Romans 8:23 tells us that the laws of physics will remain pervasively in effect until God’s redemptive work is complete.’

In brief response, I think that the categories of pre-scientific thinking (which was phenomenological) and modern scientific thinking should not be mixed in this way. If they were to be so mixed, it would quickly lead to absurdities, for example that the hills are literally ‘everlasting’ (Gen 49:26, ESV, NASB, AV, RV, etc.).
