The fear of the Lord
A term used frequently in Scripture to denote a right attitude towards God.
1. IMPORTANCE
Deut 4: 10 “…that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live upon the earth, and that they may teach their children so.”
Prov 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.”
Eccle 12:13 “…the whole duty of man.”
Luke 12:4, 5 “…fear him who, after he has killed, has power to cast into hell.”
Acts 9:31 “…walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit…”
Rom 3:18 “There is no fear of God before their eyes.”
2. REASONS
Deut 10:12-17 “…God of gods and Lord of Lords, the great, the mighty, and the terrible God.”
Deut 10:21 “…who has done for you these great and terrible things…”
Psa 130:4 “But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.”
2 Cor 5:10 “…we must all appear before the judgement seat of Christ…” Rev 15: 4 “…for thou alone art holy.”
3. NATURE
(a) With reference to the ungodly
Gen 35:5 “.–a terror from God fell upon the cities…”
Isa 2:10 “…hide…from before the terror of the Lord…”
Heb 10:26-31 “It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.”
(b) With reference to the godly
Ex 20:20 “Do not fear…that the fear of him may be before your eyes…”
Psa 31:19 “…thy goodness, which thou hast laid up for those who fear thee.”
