Bible thoughts on time
1. God in time and eternity
Psa 90:1 – ‘O Lord, you have been our protector through all generations!
90:2 Even before the mountains came into existence,
or you brought the world into being,
you were the eternal God.
90:3 You make mankind return to the dust,
and say, “Return, O people!”
90:4 Yes, in your eyes a thousand years
are like yesterday that quickly passes,
or like one of the divisions of the nighttime.’
2. Time and eternity
Eccle 3:1 – ‘For everything there is an appointed time,
and an appropriate time for every activity on earth.’
Eccle 3:11 – ‘God has made everything fit beautifully in its appropriate time,
but he has also placed ignorance in the human heart
so that people cannot discover what God has ordained,
from the beginning to the end of their lives.’
3. Boasting of time
James 4:13 ‘Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go into this or that town and spend a year there and do business and make a profit.” 4:14 You do not know about tomorrow. What is your life like? For you are a puff of smoke that appears for a short time and then vanishes. 4:15 You ought to say instead, “If the Lord is willing, then we will live and do this or that.”’
4. Trusting in the Lord of time
Psa 31:14 – But I trust in you, O LORD!
I declare, “You are my God!”
31:15 You determine my destiny!
5. The passing of time
Psa 90:12 – ‘So teach us to consider our mortality,
so that we might live wisely.’
6. The right time
Gal 4:4 ‘But when the appropriate time had come, God sent out his Son, born of a woman, born under the law.’
Jn 17:1 – ‘When Jesus had finished saying these things, he looked upward to heaven and said, “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, so that your Son may glorify you.”‘
7. Time running out
Rom 13:11f – ‘We know the time, that it is already the hour for us to awake from sleep, for our salvation is now nearer than when we became believers. 13:12 The night has advanced toward dawn; the day is near.’
8. The rhythm of time, Ex 34:21
34:21 “On six days you may labor, but on the seventh day you must rest; even at the time of plowing and of harvest you are to rest.”
9. Waiting time
Psa 130:5f – ‘I rely on the LORD,
I rely on him with my whole being;
I wait for his assuring word.
130:6 I yearn for the Lord,
more than watchmen do for the morning,
yes, more than watchmen do for the morning.’
10. Signs of the times
Mt 16:2-3 – “When evening comes you say, ‘It will be fair weather, because the sky is red,’ 16:3 and in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, because the sky is red and darkening.’ You know how to judge correctly the appearance of the sky, but you cannot evaluate the signs of the times.”
11. Time out
Mt 14:13 – ‘Now when Jesus heard this he went away from there privately in a boat to an isolated place.’
12. Time to listen
Lk 10:41 – “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things, 10:42 but one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the best part; it will not be taken away from her.”
13. Making the most of time
Eph 5:15-16 – ‘Be very careful how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 5:16 taking advantage of every opportunity, because the days are evil.’
